Ultherapy, or Ulthera, is a non-invasive skin tightening treatment that is a non-surgical alternative the face and neck lift surgery. With the help of ultrasound energy, it helps in tightening and lifting the skin of the face, neck, and chest regions.
The popularity of Ultherapy has increased over the past few years. Clinical trials have shown that more than 65% of the patients undergoing Ultherapy observe significant improvements within 2 to 3 months after the treatment.
How Does Ultherapy Work?
Collagen is a protein present in our skin that is responsible for providing strength and elasticity to it. As we age, the production of collagen declines, and our skin begins to lose its tone and elasticity. It causes the skin to sag down and also results in the appearance of lines and wrinkles.
Ultherapy uses ultrasound energy to replenish the levels of collagen in the skin. With the help of an applicator, the focused ultrasound energy is targeted to the deep layers under the skin. Consequently, heat is produced which not only induces the strengthening of existing collagen but also stimulates the deep skin cells to enhance the synthesis of new collagen and elastin proteins. Gradually, the skin tightens up and regains its lost tone and elasticity.

How is Ultherapy done?
Initial Consultation
During your first appointment, your doctor will listen to your concerns and thoroughly assess your skin to decide whether you are a candidate for Ultherapy, or not. You will be asked about your medical history and what are you expecting from the treatment. He/she will then brief you about the treatment procedure, its benefits, outcomes, and potential side effects.
Ultherapy Treatment
On the treatment day, you will be asked to sit on an inclined table. Your face or the treatment areas will be washed or cleaned with a mild cleanser. The target areas will be marked. Local numbing cream applied 1 hour prior to procedure. In addition to numbing cream, 800mg of ibuprofen is given by mouth 1 hour prior to procedure.
After that, an ultrasound gel will be applied over the skin. The probe of the Ultherapy device will then be placed against the skin and adjusted. Ultrasound energy will be delivered to the desired areas. You may feel mild heat and tingling sensations during the procedure but these are momentary.
The treatment will last for 30 to 90 minutes depending upon the area being treated.
After the Treatment
As the procedure is done, you will be good to go and resume your daily routine activities. However, your doctor may give you some aftercare instructions that must be followed for optimum results.
Are there any Risks or Side Effects of Ultherapy Treatment?
Ultherapy is a safe and effective treatment approved by the FDA for tightening saggy skin. It has no risks of serious side effects or complications.
